Go in to the place that you think you might get a tattoo from. Talk to the artist that would be giving you the tattoo. Look at the books they have there. Just "hang out". You will learn alot and get to experience even more with just being there. I did this and got the coolest fish tattoo on my ankle/leg. It wasn't what I thought I would end up getting, but it was the one tattoo I kept going back to, over and over. I am very happy with it? My previous tattoo on my hip ( I hate it ) was all about I had to have a gecko on my hip. Well? If I would have taken the time to actually LOOK around I wouldn't have gotten a tat there much less the gecko.
Good luck...its permanent? So in my opinion? Get something that will remind you of something or that YOU like looking at.

Honey, trust me I am the last one who would lecture you, I have 13 and am still getting more. It is a very serious decision though, and should not be taken lightly. Remember, this will be on your body for the rest of your life. I would suggest something you have a connection to. I am Irish, so most of my tattoos are Celtic, or are in some way influenced by Celtic design. My first tattoo though, I had no idea what I wanted, so I just started browsing the net, and tattoo shops for different ideas. I am in love with dolphins, they are my favorite animal, so that is what I got for my first tattoo. If you would like me to, I can email you pictures of my artwork, and you can see what I've had done just for a kind of starting point. Email me if you want. Also, make sure you find a place that is very reputable, extremely clean, and where the artists are mature and know what they are doing. Ask around in your area about where the best places to go are, and take a visit to some of these places. Most of them will not mind you watching them ink someone else to get a feel for their procedures, and talent. Just remember, it will be with you forever, and it doesn't have to make anyone happy or impress anyone but YOU.

When I turned 18 I was going to get a tattoo right away, but I didn't. I'm glad now, but I can understand how you feel so this is what I suggest.

I agree that you should get something small, expecially for your first. Maybe get a tattoo that reminds you of your youth? It doesn't have to be corny. Don't get something way too average, try and do something no one else has.

For example; take a few of your favorite lyrics, song titles, books, stories, anything... and create an image of it. No one would have that! If you can draw it's always fun to design it.

DO NOT get japanese/oriental symbols, random black designs or a hummingbird with a flower.

Please make up your mind, and get something that YOU want.
I work at a tattoo shop, and I see so many younger people ( under 20) getting tattoos that they dident think through properly. These are the same people that come back in a few months and 'add to it' to make it bigger and complain that the wish that they got something else, got it somewhere else, got it bigger, or dident get it at all.

DON'T rely on other people for suggestions.
DON'T pick something off the wall. Its so typical. Everybody has those tattoos.
DON'T get a tattoo for the sake of getting a tattoo.

Think of something that means something to you. Many girls pick a flower(typically a rose), an insect(typically a butterfly, dragonfly or a ladybug),fairy( but they have to be large) or a symbol(typically their astrological sign or a kanji-japenese symbol) for their first tattoo. If you are going with this route. Give it serious thought and carry the image with you for a few weeks. Think about it. Cut out a photocopy and stick it on your body to see how it looks. Bond with the image. Its going to be on you forever.
If after 2 weeks of bonding with the image, you are sure, Go for it, you still may reget it, but at least you made somewhat of a responsable decision, rather than jumping at the first flash art you picked off the wall.

You also want to be sure your picking a clean, sterile, and experienced tattoo shop. Ask for portfolios. If you feel uncomfortable when you walk in there, walk out.

Get something that you can easily hide if needed. Your still young and don't know what life will bring. A lot of employers are still a little prejudice against tattoos. For example, I know a girl who has a large blue bird on her neck. She has a hard time getting a job and usually is told she needs to cover it up. It is so unappealing to wear a big white dressing on your neck.

I got a tribal design on 2-22-99 when I was 18
I wanted to mark my body to remember that my body is
my canvas; I'm an artist and will decorate my life how I see fit!

The tribal design took several months of research to come up with on I liked enough.
Make friends with the tattoo artists, they will do mock art and decal the design before it is final...

Pick up a set of Rapidograph Pens and India ink to start drawing the designs, to get an idea of how large to get one and the right area...

Have any questions e-mail me.

For my first tattoo I got a butterfly on my lower right side back. Now everyone has a butterfly, it's common, so I wouldn't get that.

How about a star black outline with a cool color inside like electric blue or blood red, then palce it in a hardcore yet hip spot, like the side of your neck or the base of your neck, your inner four arm or wrist.

I love tattoos, I have 2! I have my kid's names. Anything is great, just make sure that it is something that you will not outgrow (like a cartoon character, or a boyfriend's name). And if you can get it in a place that you can cover if you want to, like the back of your shoulder. Good luck and have fun!!

I don't think it's terrible to have tattoos. Just think carefully about which one to get. You could get something small like a butterfly or flower. I would pick a butterfly! So pretty!
