Public intoxication is a minor crime and the punishment for it is imprisonment until the person committing it comes to his senses.

I suppose it all depends on where they were picked up. My husband was caught when he was 16 and was released right after they processed him at the station. Unfortunately the police made him walk home from the station which was a 45 minutes drive from home. This was all before we were married or I would have picked him up.
