hypertext transfer protocol, and it's the protocol to request a webpage from a server and the response from the server.
other protocols that you see a bit less that come to my mind are
ftp, file transfer protocol, for file tranfers directly from the server
smtp, simple mail transfer protocol, the email tranfering
