i used to manage a theater. the snack bar is the only reason for a theater to operate. a good first run movie costs as much or more than the tickets you sell. often quite a bit more.

You guessed it! Money.
I've been told that the profit margin on movie tickets is rather low. In case you haven't noticed, food in the movie theater is expensive. Without food sales, many movie theaters would probably go out of business.

Hmm, I must've pissed a few people off the time I snuck in a whole piping hot pizza...sorry, I was starving! It's their fault for having a 6:30 show time - how are you supposed to get through a movie without dinner??

I actually get paid money to sit behind people and crunch popcorn as loud as I possibly can. No reason, cinema owners are just mean! ;PPP

Sorry Honey, I'm going to have to disagree with you. That's the only place I can indulge my shamelessly extravagant habit of Movie Popcorn with Milk Duds. The melding of the buttery(flavoured) crunchy popcorn with the chocolaty stickiness of the milk dud...ah yes....forgive me, I'm drooling....

It just wouldn't be a movie theater without that sticky goo on the floor.
