I'm afraid that you seem to have forgotten to mention [a] what your OS is [Windows XP, Windows 98 etc or, for that matter MAC OSX or even Linux]; [b] whether or not you'd recieved the e-mail that your boyfriend wanted to send you, which had a picture or something like that in it and [c] whether or not you'd shut down your computer last night and powered it on when you woke up. These details would've helped me analyse the problem more accurately and give you the proper steps to resolve the issue with.
However, in the absence of this information, may I suggest that you cold reboot your system? That's cut your power to the computer without doing the shut down and switch it back on. This will have your computer automatically check the discs for consistency and boot from start up; freeing any clogging that might have occurred and resolve the issue in a very simple manner.
If, after a cold reboot, you are still unable to restore your active desktop, which is what enables you to view the icons etc. there, then you might want to use the use the tutorials that are in the sites for which I've provided you with links below and follow the one relevent to your particular OS. Since I don't know which OS you use, I've got you the links for as many as I could.
At any rate, once you've restored your active desktop, my suggestion is that you run your anti-virus to elminate the possibility of a virus having infected your system.
If you do not have a good anti-virus on board, I'd reccommend that you download and install Avast which is a very good anti-virus with an absolutely free-of-cost licence for Home Users. You can do that at the first link you'll find below. Please fill up the registration form that you'll find the red highlighted word [which is the link] for there so that you may recieve your licence via e-mail and use the full licenced version.
All the very best.
Cheers.

That could have just been that he cleaned out the trash.
Right-click on the desktop and click in properties, then Desktop, then Customize Desktop, then it's pretty obvious...
To get other shortcuts just drag them with the right mouse button and a menu will appear to help you out.
Personally i like a minimalistic desktop.

you could purely delete icons (they are purely shortcuts), this gained't influence the corresponding courses. in case you want to take Microsoft's icons off the personal computer, receive TweakUI (record TweakUiSetup.exe) form Microsoft. this can do this the better way. And it has so a lot extra functional feachures.

1. Could be a virus (do you have an antivirus program?)
2. Someone may have hijacked your computer. (do you have a firewall?)
3. Your boyfriend could've deleted all of the icons from the desktop.
Must be one of the three.
