If the exhaust is bluish in color then you're burning oil. If the smoke is more grey to black then I would suspect a fouled spark plug. Check the color of the smoke first. If it is black, change your spark plug(s). If it still does it with new plugs, try adding a little bit of fuel injector cleaner to your gas tank. I wouldn't put more than 2 or 3 ounces to a 4 gallon tank! This would clean out your carbs and if you had any varnish building up in them it would take care of that problem and any sputtering you might be experiencing. However, if the smoke is blue in color, then you are burning oil. Check with your local shop and see if a ring job on it's own is recommended or if an entire top end rebuild is in order. If its a 4 stroke engine, you could be leaking oil around the valve guide seals as well, if you have overhead cams. These are just a few suggestions. Smoke color first should give you some clue!

i assume this is a 4-stroke motor if its started smokeing this means your piston rings have worn out but you will need to change the piston also as the rings and the piston wear out at the same rate also try to change the oil every 10 hours of riding good luck fixing your bike

Maybe but I'd check out the carbs and make sure the CHOKE system on your carbs are not stuck before assuming the expensive engine repairs already. They may need to be removed and have a carb kit installed but that would only improve the performance if its not the problem. If it is you saved yourself a bundle of garage time.

If it hasnt been serviced regularly it probably needs entire top end done, valve guides (or at least seals), piston, rings, gaskets, etc.
Its OHC so probably beyond your mechanical abilities, if you time it wrong it will cost a lot more to get fixed.
Is it an overbore kit on a 400EX?
