You're kidding, right?
Walmart has been sued numerous times for illegal pay practices (no overtime, not enough breaks, under minimum wage, etc.). They've been busted for hiring illegals to clean their stores at night. They have been sued for racist and gender-biased hiring and promotion practices. One informational link is below, do an internet search on "walmart employment problems" and you'll find hundreds more.
So the answer to your question is: No, they are not a good employer and they do not pay well.

So, as you can see, everyone has an opinion about this. And, they're all over the ballpark.
In the end, you have to decide for yourself. Like any really big company, it probably suffers from bureaucratic foul-ups. Stuff like this probably didn't happen as much in the early days, because the company was a lot smaller. On the other hand, Wal-Mart is NOT the devil incarnate, and so many of the complainers are no more than union activists who hate any big business. There is still opportunity for advancement with Wal-Mart, I'm sure, and while pay is obviously not in the "professional" paygrade, it is likely more than what similar employers may pay.
In the end, I think you're better off getting an education and seeking a professional job. But if you're in a position that Wal-Mart is the best job available, I think there are probably a lot worse places to work.
Best of luck to you.

You apparently don't watch the news much. Don't expect any insurance, apply for food stamps and be a part of the reason so many boycot walmart.... If you have an ...in-n-out ... in your area, they are the number one employer anywhere they are for normal low end jobs.

I think that WalMart is a good company to work for..as long as you go to work stay out of clicks..you'll be ok..and for God's sake!!..don't stand around and gossip..Because whatever you say it will be over the whole store by the next 2 days..lol
But money wise, they' re ok..my brother in law works for that company, he has good benefits..shareholders, I think 401k, medical, and he brings home over a $1,000.00 within a month!!..and I heard through him that he was able to get a banking account through them and he was in "check systems"..so yea I think it's a cool company to work for especially for people with little or no education. Even if you are educated they do have coporate office positions as well..depends on what position in WalMart you are looking for

if you don't know if its a good employer and pays well then you should go to Walmart your self, then once you see and employer then ask he/she your question and ask more than one then once you made your decision then you can work there or find a different kind of job.

I worked for Walmart for four years, and I must say that the amount of work that I put in for the amount of pay - was crap.
There is this poster in the lunchroom that tells you about your 'TOTAL COMPENSATION'.
Basically, it's trying to talk you into believing that your crap pay is actually good.
They take your hourly wage, and figure out, per hour, what your benefits are, and figure that into your compensation.
So if you are making $8.50/hr (which is what I was making after FOUR YEARS) they say that you are actually making $10.50 an hour because your benefits are worth like $2/hr. Umm.... Okay. Way to cheap out!

I worked for Walmart and my starting pay was 7.00 and hour. I was promised 7.50 an hour. When I went to management I was laughed at. I was told that since I was hired as a greeter/cashier, I was lucky I was getting 7.00 because greeters make even less than that.
I gave my two weeks notice.

Pay is ok. But I have heard bad things about working there. Look them up on the internet. Not the store but in the news. They have lawsuits pending from prior employees.

I worked at wal mart, though the place was dirty it wasn't bad. You start a 8.50 that was two years ago in CT. It might be more. Also you get a raise twice in six months. It's a good job.

the Wal-Mart freaks will tell you yes but the media has run numerous stories about them not paying well and keeping peoples hours short enough so they don't have to offer them health insurance. All you can do is try it out.
