You should talk to your doctor. A gynecologist is the best person to talk to...

I've been on the pill for almost 8 years now and was very excited about the injection that came out that had much the same result. I was getting ready to go into the doctor's office when my friend advised me to check out side effects first. I am SO glad she warned me, because the list nearly blew me away, and once I talked to a friend who had taken it and heard her horror stories and others, I was very thankful I didn't get it! The problem with the injection is that once it's in your system you can't do anything about it, it just has to run it's course and you're stuck with it until it's out of your system (which is more than a month). One of my friend's bled for a month straight, and it wasn't just spotting, it was constant flow. I would be very careful, find out the exact name of the drug you are considering taking, and research it online (don't just go by what your doctor says either, mine seemed a little too eager for me to give it a try). Check message boards, www.webmd.com, and do a general search for *drug name* and "side effects" on a search engine like yahoo. It is always a good idea to be well-informed about any kind of drugs that has this big an effect on your body.

Go to your doctor, nurse practitioner, or local clinic! Also look on the Internet for the brand name of pill and company that makes it and look at the information there about the side effects and stuff like that!
Get the correct information - from the proper sources - so you can make an informed choice! Information is out there - real easy to find - you need to be informed about all drugs that will effect the natural menstrual cycle. They usually have effects that show up much later! Take the time - to make an informed choice!

Personally, I've been afraid to try it, for the same reasons other women listed here. It affects a natural process too much for me to consider it safe. There aren't any long-term studies on it yet, it's too new.

The regular old pill however, has been around for 50 years and is relatively safe. I started taking it when I was 16 years old.

I don't think there is a minimum time frame on number of periods prior to starting the pill.

The side effects of the pills are worse then getting your period. The pills that let you have your period four times a year can cause spotting or bleeding, so it would just be like having your period any ways.

You can always eat better and exercise to make your periods lighter and not as long.

Your doctor is the only person who can answer this for you - he/she will take your whole health picture into consideration and prescribe the pill that will be the best one for you. At your age, you should not be using the pill as your only form of birth control because it does not protect against STD's. Good luck!

If your doctor says it is okay, then it is fine. A healthy woman/teen can get away with having just the 4 periods a year. You just have to have it the 4 times so your body can clean itself out.

You would have to ask your Dr. He would know your body. He would also know more information about the medicine and how it works. If you are really young, talk to your mother and try to get her to take you. My mother wouldn't take me when I was 16 so I went to a free clinic with a friend. Look for one in the phone book and they can help you with that as well. Best of luck.
