The mother's name is considered part of the name, though the middle name is considered to be his family name and is the one that gets passed on to one's children. Thus, since his father's family name was Clemente and his mother's was Walker his full name was "Roberto Clemente Walker", though "Roberto Clemente" was the commonly used and acceptable shortened form.
