When I travel, I tell people I am from Buffalo. No one knows where it is. So, I have to tell them it is in New York. Then they automaticly think New York City, 380 miles away. In reallity, there is little in common between these cities.
WNY taxes go to Albany, and from there, go to benifit NYC. Our economy has been in the toilet for over 30 years (Remember the economic prosperity of the 90's? We never had it!) Our citys' have had a negative growth rate for decades, and our bills to Albany have increased. I pay $8,500 a year in property tax on my 650sf. My home is only worth $35,000. We cannot vote out our leaders, we have state appointed "controll boards" in place in all major local and county governments.

The only way to get our own voice in our government is to either Succede, or hold a coup.

No taxation without representation! except WNY.

What do you think?

If the solution would take a generation to right wrongs, how come we don't do it anyway? We are talking 3 generations of Bullshit here. One more to clean it up sounds worth it.

What Clinton money? Western New York is not upstate. All the fedural grants are for QEZ's not located in the region. Rochester can feel me on this.
Long Island whiners don't bother answering. I'll submit you for abuse.

For those who criticize spelling, yet can't read the question, the question is about sucession of the western counties of new york form the rest of the state, not the U.S., creating thier own state that can actually provide a legislative voice, as well as rid ourselves from state appointed controll boards, which suspend local government and hand authority on spending and taxation to a group of people appointed by the governor.
Sucession from the U.S. is unconstitutional, ask anyone from South Carolina.

Secession would probably make fiscal sense for the upstate area since Albany uses upstate tax dollars to fund NYC projects. I hate to say it, but Hillary Clinton has been more or less true to her campaign promises to bring Federal money to the upstate region. That isn't the real issue here though, since it is the state government that allocates those high NY property taxes away from the upstate area. To actually answer your question though . . . No, it would be imprudent for upstate New York to secede since it would create political chaos and the economic benefits would be at least a generation away from manifesting themselves.

You seem pretty passionate about the issue - and it is apparent that you weren't really "asking" the question since you have already made up your mind. Why don't you move out of New York? You're right that the upstate region is economically depressed, but it hasn't been that way for "3 generations." Until the 70s and 80s the upstate area was home to many large corporations (IBM had plants and offices all over New York). And by the way, most people within and without New York use the term "upstate" to refer to everything above Westchester County. See Wikipedia, or just ask a few of your neighbors. Good luck with your secession campaign, and try to keep an open mind since there are other options out there.

That property tax sounds outrageous. No offense, but maybe this new republic could have schools that teach that it's secede, not succede, which actually isn't a word. I think most New Yorkers would miss Social Security, highway funds, education funds, Medicare, Medicaid (expenses shared by federal and state), use of our currency, food stamps, reliance on that little thing we call the armed forces, etc.
And of course you are taxed. But you also have two senators and numerous representatives, as well are one of the largest per capita recipients of federal funding of any state.

They shouldn't secede.

They should saw Bronx county off from Westchester and Connecticut and let it, the rest of NYC and Long Island drift out to sea.
