Same reason a lot (not all) white people think they are superior to other races. Ignorance has no color and it exists in every race.

Someone else asked a similar question in reverse. Here is what I wrote about prejudice as a whole:
Well, I have good news and bad news: Prejudice usually reflects a fear of the unknown or unfamiliar; coupled with just plain ignorance and propaganda often perpetuated by misguided parents. It is often passed down from father to son. I don't believe we will live long enough to see it completely eradicated; but there have been some great strides toward more unity (which is the good part).
It is often unwittingly participated in by both involved parties; and in an unwillingness to believe they are respected or seen as a complete human being. Attitude plays a large part toward fueling the flames of prejudice. It is hard to know when you are being dissed and when the other party is innocent of ill intent...and simply floundering in their attempt to breach the gap. I've witnessed both versions.
Anyone who knows me personally; also knows I am completely devoid of these issues. One time this ole' black gal got in my face and played the race card on me. I told her, "No, it has nothing to do with it...and I still don't like you." She blamed all her negative interactions on the color of her skin...but it is also sadly revealing...because she probably has known a great deal of prejudice within her life-time; and she could no longer know the difference.
It is how these things can spin out of control. There are many forms of prejudice; including but not limited to the way someone looks, or their economic circumstances. We are often judged by superficial standards. Sometimes, I feel as though people aren't happy unless they have something to hate.
Hatred is an act of cowardice, a sense of superiority and entitlement. They have a need or desire to feel better about themselves at the expense of another. What a shame, huh?
I wish people could be individually evaluated on their own merit....but I live in the real world. I do have the courage of my convictions, however…and have known a more subtle and insidious form of prejudice by association. It gave me an inkling of what it must be like for certain people in certain regions of the country. I try to offset it and educate as best as I can.
I don't want to think about the ramifications on someone’s spirit or a small child's bird's eye view of the world. Hatred is an evil emotion benefiting no one. It hurts the hater as much it does the target of their wrath. It will eventually die a quiet death; but I doubt we will be around for it...and I imagine it will simply be transferred to yet another unsuspecting group of human beings.
I have discovered that people of color often have a strength of spirit not present in someone without these Life experiences. There is something about it that does ennoble the spirit; and can be a very blessed thing. I have a lot of respect for people who hold their heads up high in spite of this unwarranted adversity.
Maybe there should be a exchange program where people can trade places for a little way; or live in homes with people different than themselves…then they’d understand better. Until then, we can all do our part by refusing to participate in it and in any of its many myriad and thinly disguised, unsavory forms.

It is an unfortunate thing that people who have been "put upon" often turn into what they most dislike; and that they rarely recognize it in themselves. It's a human thing (as I categorize no sub genre in Human.....another race could be a hamster or another mammal) to dislike that which is different from what the person is used to. Those black people who are racists are no different from their white counterparts. I wish they'd ALL stop, personally.

This is a good question. I have always wondered myself.
Thanks for asking. Hope you get some good answers.
My own opinion: I think that some assume that because they have been the target of discrimination, prejudice, and persecution, that they are the ones who racism hits.
Many people only sees themselves and not others. If you know what I mean. That goes for many concepts in life, not just this one.

I wonder that a lot too. It seems to me that the world has less white against black racism and more black against white. However, many people don't consider this equal in prejudice. I hear black people calling white people names all the time and it amkes me feels sad becasue I know they would'nt want me to joke there race. Why is it more acceptable?

I go to school with a lot of white people, more white than black, Asian, or Hispanic and sometimes i just get this feeling that some of the white students feel they r better than black people, I'm not racist. I "people watch" sometimes and just listen to them and watch how they act and I can hear it in the way they talk or see it in their body language. I guess its just the way it is.

people with white(light colored) sking historically considdered themselves as superior. Moden people with darker skin often still harbor some resent for the opressors they heard about in stories.
the first people probably were mid-brown, that way the whole spectrum could have come from them. there fore all colors are equal, except people with dark skin don't sunburn as easily. Thats a plus for them.
