Politically yes but it was a reasonable story line as Paul E. has done the same thing to Brock Lesnar in November of 2002 turning on him when he faced the Big Show allowing Big Show to beat Lesnar for the WWE title. Similarly RVD and Lesnar were both refusing to heed Paul's warnings and so Paul felt obliged to teach them a lesson.

He turned on RVD because they needed to take the belt off of him that did not show him as being weak. He did not lose the belt without outside interference. When he comes back, he will be a viable contender for the belt without having to reprove himself.

RVD was found with coccaine so he had to lose the WWE title to someone to allow the court proceedings to go smoothely. Thats also why he lost the ECW title, cos he had to go to court. So remember! Dont do drugs or you will losse the title!

They needed to find a way to get the belt of RVD before his suspension.
btw, it was pot he was caught with, not cocaine. Like it makes a difference, but still...
