Even in a tribal community where everyone does their 'fair' share, there is still someone handing out what your fair share is. That person has some power...

Does such a society exist? Where everyone is absolutely equal? Is it possible?

When you work in a restaurant, the assistant manager is generally the one who makes up the schedule and they also have a boss to report to and ultimately he has very little power. It doesn't take power to figure out all that needs to be done and assign it to people by skill or on a first come first serve basis.

There are some wonderful books written about just such a thing:

and

While these stories are fictional, I think it is a fascinating concept and I think such a thing would work in our society, particularly the 2nd book here. The first link it about a smaller community of maybe 100 (as I recall). The second one is America wide.

Peace!

Anarcho-syndicalist commune. (from Monty Python)
It doesn't work except in Sweden. The people all have to be above average. See why it doesn't work? If Swedes are above average, then everyone else ends up average or below.
There are also things called "intentional communities", where people choose to live a certain way or with a certain philosophy. These only work for a while, then the smart ones get tired of doing all the work, and they leave and it all falls down, you see.

IMHO it is a theoretical construct that can serve the purpose of social model, or vision, but is not attainable in reality - like the concept of 'unconiditonal love' on a personal level- it sets a goal and you can try to come close, but you will not achieve it.

This is the communist manifesto. No a true communist society has never existed. Marx believed it would be an evolution of society most likely achieved by a western country.
