Yes, it may affect your baby if you don't take them. Folic acid reduces the chances of spinal bifida and the rest of the vitamins helps your baby to grow and develop properly and be healthy. If they make you nauseated when you take them, try taking them before bed with a glass of milk.

I will tell you what the doctor told me.

The prenatals are NOT for the baby (however, the folic acid thing is correct---but many things now-a-days are enriched with folic acid because of those studies). The prenatals are for the MOM> The baby will SUCK whatever it needs out of the mother.....it is the mother who will suffer with anemia or low calcium levels and the like.

Some women can't stomach the vitamins and don't take them. If you are eating lots of fruits and veggies, then you are likely getting the vitamins anyway. You need to get folic acid, especially in the first trimester. Orange juice is a good source.

If you don't take folic acid regularly in the beginning of the pregnancy, your fetus is at risk of developing neural defects.

I did not take them my son is healthy. Do what you feel is right for you and your baby. Know that there are risks if you are not taking them. You should be eating VERY healthy and drinking lots of water.

Yes it is bad not to take them and yes it can effect the baby. They help prevent some birth defects. Why don't you want to take them ?
