How can I tell which one I have?

AMD motherboards require a 24 pin instead of a 20 pin. AMD processors require extra power to them, hence the extra 4 pins. Count the pins to see how many you have. This is the main power connection to your motherboard. Make sure you know which pin configuration you need for your motherboard before you get a power source.

I might be wrong, but... Pentium 2, 3, and amd capable motherboards use a 20 pin power supply. Pentium 4 boards use the same 20 pin connector, but also has a square 4 pin connector that plugs into the motherboard. In my experience, as long as the power supply has adaquate power output, you can use a p-4 unit with an amd processor, but a pentium 4 requires the extra 4 pin connector..

count the number of pins, the 24 usually have a way to remove the extra 4 so it is multipurpose power supply

well, only 4 pin was added for standby mode and has a separate 4 pin connectors. motherboards today has a power LED (green led) on it that indicate standby mode or even when not powered on it will still glow.
