I have a Silver Queen Maple that I planted a year ago in June. After I planted it, I noticed a damaged spot on the bark. I wrapped it over the winter (like I do all my maples until they deveop a hard bark) and this spring, it budded out and blossomed just fine. Now the leaves look a bit different...the stems of the leaves are reddish and the bark on the bottom has deveoped a few large splits! I can't seem to keep trees alive back there! It is dying? Is there a way I can save it? Should I wrap the bark? Help!

The tree is absorbing something that is killing it.
Have the soild analized not just for acidity but for hydrocarbons and salt.

You might try digging out the existing dirt and replacing it.

Depending on where you live, there are new insects in the U.S. that the trees do not have immunity for.

I heard a report on National Public Radio two weeks ago about a new beetle. Causes splitting of the bark.

Their suggestion is to contact a local tree farm and ask if it is a problem in your area. Describe the symptoms to them.

take a soil sample from around the tree's root line and have it analyzed by your local agricultural extension service or your nearest university. This will find out if the soil is to blame.

the other things, is it getting enough light, too much or too little water, most trees need supplemental watering for up to a year after transplanting to re-establish the feeder roots.

Contact your local Master Gardener's office for more info.

Wrapping is a no-no. You don't say where you live--some areas have hard pan which roots hit, then tree dies. Try amending heavily, then mulching for 1st yr--otherwise, be patient--do not fertilize til year 2.
