I'm 30. Never been able to jump into a pool or lake without holding my nose. If I don't, water always goes up my nose. I've heard your supposed to breathe out, but doesn't the force of the water just shoot up there anyway? Plus, if you breath out you won't have any breath left to hold. How do I do it?

You can either breath out a bit from your nose when you enter the water, or do what I do and force your tongue up against the back of your throat/palate, which closes off your airway from your nose. It could compress the air into your sinuses a little so water could enter, but unless you're jumping off a really high spot, there won't be much water that enters if any.

Just breathe out slightly through your nose at the same time as your face hits the water when jumping in. Don't blow out all your air though. The water won't shoot up your nose.

If you're diving in head first, do the same, just breathe out slightly through your nose during impact with the water. The water doesn't shoot up your nose.

the water does not "shoot" up your nose, because if you hold your breath, you are forcing water out. Main idea: take a deep breath and hold it

its a skill. forst work in the water and just put your head under and breath out. theres a reason why people take a big breath before they jump. just keep breathing out through your nose once you hit the water and dont inhale for any reason and you should be ok.

Its a little tricky but you cant have your head at a ninety degree angle to the water when you jump in.....and its not so much breathing out....its pushing air up into the nasal cavity but not letting it escape....this causes a pressure build up in your mouth and nasal cavity that is greater then the water trying to get in.

The easy solution is not to jump in ....but to do a soft dive in...head first.

Exhale hard out from your nostrils, practice makes perfect, or use nose plugs, or continue holding your nose.

Blow the air out of your nose. I tried it yesterday and it worked. Build up to higher levels later.
