i'm buying a laptop and i know super drives can burn DVDs, but is that just for movies? what are the advantages of having that? i'm a college student...wondering how much use I would get out of it. please help!

Some of the reasons people buy DVD burners is to burn movies, watch movies, copy VHS to DVD, and transfer their camcorder movies from digital tape to DVD. Another reason people buy them is that they will burn CDs as well as DVDs. Another reason is disc capacity, a CD holds 700MB, a DVD holds 4.7GB. Really nice for doing computer backups. And dual layer discs hold up to 8.5GB! But, the blank media for dual layer is still quite expensive. Some drawbacks, they are extremely "picky" about the blank media that you must use. The manufacturer of the drive will provide you with a list of blank media manufacturers that their burner will burn to. Anything else that you try to use will most likely not work.

Its best to get a DVD burner is you can to leave yourself options in the future. Most laptops do not have the hard drive space to burns movies unless you are doing one at a time.
By all means get a laptop that has at least a CDrom burner. If you never see burning movies in your future this will be enough.
When you say combo drive you might be talking about a CDrom Burner and a DVD player combo. Being you said your a college student its something very nice to have. One day you can put a movie in your laptop, headphones on and completely ignore a roomate!

Of course if you are an netizian you will need DVD burner for those
copious amount of juicy data to backup!!!
