Philip:
Once upon a time, schools customarily mailed out thick packages to prospective applicants, but the cost of paper and mailing has made the colleges much more hesitant about doing so. Almost all schools encourage interested students to visit their websites, where they almost all provide complete catalogs, and all of the sorts of things that used to come in the mail.
The best way to get on a school's mailing list is to visit the school in the person. When you check in at the admissions office, you'll fill out a student information form, and before you know it, you'll be hearing from schools more often than you ever wanted.
If "the great college tour of 2006" is not on the agenda right now, simply contact the admissions office at the phone number you'll find on each school's site, and ask them to send you a package for prospective students - they all still send such packages - but they make it just a tad bit more difficult to request one.
Here's Howard's admissions department info, for example:
EM/Admission
Howard University
2400 Sixth Street NW
Washington, DC 20059
(800) 822-6363
(202) 806-2763
Good luck!

Believe it or not, many things are done by archaic technologies such as the telephone, or postal service, instead of through websites. Feel free to call or (gasp) write a letter to the admissions department and ask a human being to be added to their mailing list.

Yes you are probably missing something. You can always call the phone numbers on the site as well and ask the representative to send you information.
