If he said his sister (or even is mother) is a whore, I don't think so. Those are common insults in Italian (like "son of a b****", or "motherfu****" in English).

If he said something racist, then yes, he must be sanctioned.

As of now, nobody knows what he said. There's many rumors, but no truth.

Materazzi wont be punished for anything as no one can be sure he said anything.. The only thing Fifa have to go on is why would Zidane do that.. Keep in mind that Zidane came out of retirement to help france get to the WC and then he did this.. My guess is Materazzi said something pretty low for Zidane to react like that! And also oh he plays for Italy and Italy are the dirtiest team out there.. so yeah.. chances are he said something extremely low!

oh yeah he definitely should. I mean even if trash talking is part of the game..maybe it really shouldn't be part of the game!
I mean what's the game has to do with calling ur mother a WHORE!! whatever happened to ethics and FAIR PLAY!! I mean I was an Italian fan all along but after the incident I'm not so sure coz of this guy materazzi. Lip reading experts confirmed the insults and he should be banned for a period of time or even have his name omitted from the list of players in the squad who won the cup or something. He just can't get away with it.

Sure he should be punished
because some analysts used a program to read marco's lips and study the accident they find out that materazzi called zidan some bad words including "Terrorist" and "son of Whore" but this program is still working on that and may reach one day to what materazzi said to Zidane

I also watch a video show how Materazzi act in the pitch and i fond out that he is a bad lad that deserves a ban for long time

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7HblsV-urHg&search=materazzi

I was shocked by what zidane done but after few seconds i recognize that Materazzi may say something very serious that cause zidane to lose control on himself

If Materazzi realy say these stuff i think ZIDANE should be honored of what he did it will be fair people lose control for seconds but to say something bad to other i takes minutes of thinking

I love France,Italy and Zidane but what i'm sure from it that I hate Materazzi

Definetely. Banned from soccer for x months/years after a grand inquiry. Penalized financially (say 150 000$) - this would send a clear message to all players: trash talk is unacceptable and is equal to gratutious violence that is to be banned from football. I think the FIFA fair-play displayed at the beginning of games and the "say no to Racism" pledge are all wishfull thinking. It is too bad players cannot and will not abide by these noble thoughts regarding competitions. If these were followed, no doubt this incident would not have happened. I am ashamed at Mat's trash talk, pulling jerseys etc. In sport, you should win fairly and honestly. In my values, when I play, fairness is #1, I care little for winning if cheating is involved. Cheating, by relentlessly provoking Zidane for 110 minutes to eliminate his threat on the Italian goal, is what Mat did on Sunday. It is a shame on all of soccer, much greater than Zidane's head butt. Many of us in the same situation would probably have kicked Mat in the crotch or punched him in the nose. He most likely deserved it. Let us remember not all violence is physical; Mat's violence was even more damaging and hurt Zidane to the bone. Finally, let me conclude: Zidane should not have done what he did; he should have walked away and let Materazzi talk his garbage, and after the game let him know what an ****** he is. But this is soooo easy to say in hindsight....

If I was Zidane, if I taken insulted about my mother, my sister, my ethnic and my religion, I'll punch Materazzi in the jaw.
Damn for FIFA who declared war against racism but not punished Materazzi. Materazzi is not a fair player, look at when he used Inter Milan shirt against AC Milan, he kicked Shevchenko, Rui Costa and Inzaghi. A dirty player who never been punished.

Its one thing to trash talk and another to use racial slur or say something detestable about another players family member. Now I understand if he said ZiZou you suck you need to retire old man or something like that. That is trash talking, but how the hell did racial slur or talking about someone's family member being a whore considered just trash talking? Most of you idiots who claim that Materazzi did nothing wrong know darn well that if someone was talking about your family or use any sort of racial slur that it would anger you. Not everyone is able to control their anger when it gets so personal as this. Also no one is stupid enough to believe that Zizou just decided to go bull on that Materazzi trash for no apparent reason. Now that Materazzi who already is known for his dirtyness as a football player and admit he did say something, you better believe that what he said must have been that bad. I think Zizou got his punishment already and it would be nice to see that trash called Materazzi get what he deserves. Like I said trash talking is not the issue, racial slur and talking about someone's family is beyond disrespectful. Its just as bad as being spit on. Its funny how Materazzi was so threatning by ZiZou that he had to degrade him to win a game. That's the only way trash talking cheaters can actually win something.

Materazzi is just the tip of the iceberg. That jackass (Lippi) invented the plan to get Zidane out of the match. Italian players should be banned from taking part in international football.

What makes a person (or every normal person) to react? The factors are many. A reaction may appear as a result of questioning, request, stimulation, encouragement, provocation and other forms of verbal or physical act that invites reaction.

The question on whether Marco Materrazzi should be punished is in fact TERTIARY. The more important question or the PRIME question (or the one that matter most) is the reason for Zinedine Zidane's reaction towards Materrazzi at the 108th minute of the WC final match.

Here I used the term reaction for what Zinedine did simply because without doubt there was a form of verbal act that invited it. The answer to the PRIME question is Materazzi's verbal provocation is the reason for Zinedine's reaction. And without doubt, Materrazzi was the one who is responsible for the verbal act that invited Zinedine's anger. Here, I think Materrazzi is man enough to have admitted to the press that he has actually verbally insulted Zinedine seconds before the incident occured. Which brings us to the SECONDARY question.

What kind of verbal insult that came out from Materrazzi's mouth towards Zinedine that cause the incident?

Before answering the question, I must let everybody know that I play football regularly just like other ordinary people. And just like other ordinary people who plays football, I'm used to hearing thrash-talk or even verbal insults from one person to another on and off the pitch. But as Musleem, I prohibit myself and forbid other Musleems to engage in any form of insult that may invite anger of others on and off the pitch. In Islam it is clear that insulting and hurting others are forbidden. Fighting is also forbidden, except, in the act of defending their Faith, family, property, country and dignity. For Musleems, when dignity is being made a thrash-talk, it is time to react. For Zinedine to react in such a way, the verbal insult from Materazzi must have challenged his dignity perhaps as a footballer, a Frenchman, an Arab or a Musleem. Either one, I believe, would cause the reaction. And like other Musleem, there is without doubt Zinedine was protecting his dignity.

To be honest, I have known Zinedine since 1994. It was the first time that I saw him playing on his international debut that attracted me to his play and invited so much admirition from those who watched the match. Zinedine grew up in the rough area of La Castellane in Marseille. There, if someone provokes you, you react! Zinedine does not need a complicated explaination for his reaction towards Materrazzi. What has been mentioned above is simply the answer to the incident.

On whether Materazzi should be punished...

To be honest, I feel sorry for Materrazzi. Among all the Italian footballers, why he had to be the "unlucky" one. Having said that, I considered him lucky because Zinedine could have punched him or upper-cut him on the face, or even kicked him on the groin instead of head-butt him on the chest. I'm confident Zinedine is more than capable of doing what the world saw to any footballer if thier mouths are as "big" as Materazzi's.

It is more than enough as a punishment for Materazzi to live with that (that because of his verbal insult, he was head-butted by the Greatest Footballer the world has ever seen and loved most) and hopefully to live long enough to tell his grandchildrens or perhaps great-grandchildrens (that because of his verbal insult, he was head-butted by the Greatest Footballer the world has ever seen and loved most)!

Nevertheless, it is no doubt that Italy is World Champion and nobody is taking the title away from them. At least not in this 4 years time. But the question that remains unanswered is why Materazzi had to insult Zinedine?

It could be a lot factors. It could be that he is actually a dirty player like everyone knows. It could be that the team manager had planned this earlier and Materazzi was chosen to be the sacrifice-goat. It could the Italian team is actually full of smooth dirty tricks, just like their Serie A league, and wait for the precise moment to execute it. It could be. But that's just me talking. Only Allah knows every single thing.

verbal jousting is a part of the game, just as much as henri's diving ability or the bad referreeing we have seen. it doesnt give someone an excuse to go around head butting people. no one will know what was said and no one ever will probably. a great player like zizou should not have done what he did. he let himself, france and the game down. amazing. italy won fair and square, his sending off had nothing to do with it. i think its all a typical french reaction to losing. turn the spotlight away from their inadequacy and turn it on the evil italian conspiracies to cheat and lie and pay referrees and use voodoo to make zidane do what he did. grow up france...... you lost. be sportsmen and be graciuous. punishment should go for those who commit assault. not for freedom of speech. something you guys call 'la liberte d'expression' i believe.
