Laws are fair in the proportion that they benefit the greatest number of people. With fair laws, the innocent are protected, and the guilty pay for their crimes.
However, injustices occur if those who enforce the law and the courts and rulers apply those laws unfairly because of hatred, ignorance, stupidity, or many other reasons.
When something is very important to a small group, the law should take into consideration their needs but not necessarily change the law just because that small group wants the change because, obviously a small group of identify thieves, for example, would not want laws against identity theft.
But religious minorities, for example or small political groups need protection if their needs go against the current laws.
These can be complicated issues since it is not always easy to tell the difference between what a group really needs and what they just want.
When we talk on the level of nations, there can be conflicts because different nations have different needs and ideas about what is fair. When nations can't come to an agreement about the laws which govern their relationships, they may get into a war, fairly or unfairly.
When inside a country, the laws are terribly unfair or the administration of the laws is unjust, there may be rebellions or even a huge revolution.

I believe that law is a general set of rules that the majority of people have created in order that everyone will treat everyone else like they would want to be treated. I do not think that the law is completely fair, but I also do not think it is the opinion of a specific group of people. If the current law was not in place, what kind of society would we live in? Noone would dare say they would rather live in a society without law. Therefore, even law that isn't completely fair produce lives that are better than ones without the law.

The are at least two aspects to "law." One is the personal/individual view. The other is the societal view. The problem is how to balance both viewpoints; this is always the challenge of any government. In the USA, the normal position is that "law" must protect the rights of the majority. So, even if I do not like a particular law, if it favors the majority of the people, it is fair on the societal level. But not on the personal level. The problem here is that there will always be some in any society who believe that "law" is only fair when it satifies their personal postion/view. And that is not possible; to have any laws to govern society automatically means that someone is not going to have their opinion/view of law observed. The trick for any government is to alienate as few citizens as possible, or to have as few laws as possible.

I think that laws are fair depending on the motive. For example at a four way stop. Who ever gets there first goes through first( most of the time). Red lights are not meant to be henderences but to show respect to the other man to allow him to go through.Law brings order and respect. Many people take the law in their own hands and it brings consequences.
Other laws that are trying to be passed such as gay marriages bring disorder to families so... I say men try to pass laws that bring confusion but I believe laws are to bring respect and order. God didn't create the family to be two gay people because in the Old Testament law was first introduced which condemned homosexuality. Law was created by God even from the very beginning but man twist the law to make it what they want.

No i don't think that it is. However, i don't think that it could ever be fair. you have so many situations where the same law should not apply, but because it's the law it all falls under the same umbrella Times change people change but the law is the law. The law is made of opinion, thought, and views and everybody has one!

Yes and no. Laws are fair in the sense that the majority of the people perceive them to be fair, thus they are fair. But in the grand scheme of things the current laws are not fair. How can some not involved in the incident pass judgment on the people involved? How can a truly impartial jury exist?Laws are reflections of the people who created them they are their values and morals and thus are not completely fair.

Personally, I think Laws can go both ways. I think that a good person can make a mistake and get treated just like the bad person down the road. I don't think that is fair. Some laws are just outright RIDICULOUS! I think our system has many flaws, but I think all in all, it's okay.

No it's not fair. Prime example of it is the laws the Bush administration has passed. Because he's a biggoted homophobe, same sex couples are denied the same rights that opposite sex couples take for granted. They just want to be seen as equal to us, and until they are allowed to marry their partners, they never will feel equal to us. And Bush is trying to make it where Pagan religions are no longer recognized religions. Does that seem fair to you?

I do not deny the Jury passing on the prisoners Life may have a thief or two guiltier him what's known to justice... That justice seizes what is known to it the Law, that thieves do pass on thieves, but tell me when I that censure do so offend, let my own judgments be mine end. Wm Shakespare.
Laws are no better and in some cases than the men who make them, laws are only the expedient and because of this we are sometime reminded how feeble humanity can be!
