Multiply the bottom by 3 and add it to the first:
-3x - 7y = -10
3x + 9y = 12
2y = 2
y = 1

Then plug this back into either equation to get x
x + 3(1) = 4
x + 3 = 4
x =1

So x = 1 and y = 1

Well you can do it by matrices which is equivalent to:

-3x-7y=-10
3x+9y=12
2y=2
y=1
x=1

or
| -3 -7 | -10 |
| 1 3 | 4 |

=

| -3 -7 | -10 |
| 3 9 | 12 |

=

| -3 -7 | -10 |
| 0 2 | 2 |

=

| -3 -7 | -10 |
| 0 1 | 1 |

=
| -3 -7 | -10 |
| 0 7 | 7 |

=

| -3 0 | -3 |
| 0 1 | 1 |

=

|1 0 | 1 |
| 0 1 | 1|

Which is the same.

3x+7y=10 is the same as -3x-7y=-10
x= 4-3y
3(4-3y)+7y=10
12-9y+7y=10
-9y+7y=10-12
-2y=-2
y=1
x=4-3y
x=4-3(1)
x=4-3
x=1

just go down, and add all like terms
-3x + x =-2x
-7y + 3y = -4y
-10 + 4 = -6

then put all the answers in order: -2x - 4y = -6

A = [-3, -7; 1, 3]
B = [-10 ; 4]
X = [x; y]

AX = B

X = inverse(A) * B

inverse(A) = [3, 7; -1, -3]/(-3*3 + 7*1)
=[-3/2, -7/2; 1/2, 3/2]

X = [15-14; -5+6] = [1; 1]

-3*x-7*y=-10
x+3*y=4

multiplying the second equation with 3;
-3*x-7*y=-10
3*x+9*y=12

subtracting 2 equations;

2*y=2----------->y=1

putting y=1 in one of the eqautions---->x=1. QED

-3x -7y = -10 ---- (i)
x + 3y = 4 ----(ii)

multiplying (ii) by 3 we get

3x + 9y = 12 ----(iii)

adding (i) and (iii)

-3x -7y = -10 ---- (i)
3x + 9y = 12 ----(iii)

we get

2y = 2
=> y=1 ----(iv)

putting the value of y=1 in (i), (ii) or (iii) we get

x=1
