Not a washer repairman, but sounds like the aggitator motor is out. The motor that spins the bin is different. If you remove the front panel of the machine, the motor should be in the front center. Did you smell any burning smells before this quit working? That usually happens.
For redbird, above, your problem would be just the opposite, and that motor is usually on the side.

jrymtt: Some washers have only one motor that does all the work. In the wash mode a solenoid valve picks up a gear to make it agitate back and forth. When in spin mode this solenoid is down allowing a spinning motion of the tub. Unplug, remove back, have someone to turn on machine while you watch. You may see the solenoid try to pick up and will probably hear some humming if it is trying to do so. Many times you can lubricate this mechanism and it will start to work. BE SURE TO UNPLUG WHEN PUTTING HANDS INSIDE MACHINE.
Redbird your problem is probably the lid switch, many machines will wash with lid up but will not spin. You will have to find out how your top comes off (some just pry up others have screws) and then check out your lid switch. Hope this helps..RoeB

Okeedokee then. Almost every washing machine has a tumbler style timer on it. ( the knob) Try this. Unplug it. Push it in and slowly turn it all the way around. Then run an empty load with the lid closed this should prove the end of the problem. If not then its for sure the inertia switch on the damper,(the big chunk of concrete under the drum). It'll cost you about 100 bucks to have it replaced. If your boyfriend is handy in any way, he can replace it for the cost of the switch alone. About 15 bucks.

All I can tell you is what worked for me, I'm not a repair person. I had a roper and the top of the agitator comes off like the lid of a jar. Mine had kind of a ratchet sort of set up so the agitator would go one way and not the other. The little teeth had worn off. I stuffed some pieces of plastic (old weedeater blades) in there to make it solid. The agitator went back and forth instead of just one way but it cleaned great and cost nothing to fix. Hope it helps
