bicycling.... yoga.... exercise in general.... They are form fitting which is the best for lots of things. Would truly suck to get your pants leg caught in the chain of your bike, or be doing an intricate yoga pose and fall because your toes get caught in your hem....
or in the lingerie sense, knickers is a word for underwear. And that's for several reasons. Hygiene. Comfort. Men. Modesty. Sex appeal.

Because as a child they are brought up to wear them - some might wear them because it is the monthly cycle and they use pads and need something to stick the pad to ... because they have a bladder control issue and need something to hold the pad for that. Because they like the feel. Because they like the look. Because because because because! Because of the wonderful things they do! dah na doh na dah na were off to see the Wizard the wonderful Wizard of Oz.....

To protect modisty when they wear dresses and skirts. Try wearing a kilt without shorts for a few weeks and see if you dont get arrested.
