Because our country is based on a two-party system it was nesacary to appeal to both republicans and democrats so that the USA could unite as a whole against the tyrannical oppresors in Britain. Without compromise the delegates sent from each colonial state would not have reached a conclusion that formed one nation. Dividing the nation means many smaller, weaker nations. Haven't you ever heard: One for all, all for one? If everyone supported one goal, one country then there was a higher probability that the revolutionaries could win the war against the red-coats. Thats why compromise was important in the framing of the national constitution.

The states had different forms of government as a start. Some were commonwealths, others States. Some had slavery (particularly the agrarian South), and some did not. And a little known fact not taught much in schools these days is that the slavery issue was an issue at the time of the Declaration of Independence. It did not suddenly develop in the 1840's leading to the Civil War. The slavery question was raised at the very inception point of this nation - particularly by the representative from (I believe) South Carolina.

Compromises were so important because it was not a given that the newly independent British colonies would remain unified as one nation. Each of the states had a different set of interests, culture, economic system, currency, etc. In order for the states to give power over to the national government and throw their lot in with the other 12 states, they had ot be assured that their interests would be reflected in the federal charter (a.k.sa. Constitution). There were tremendously divisive elements that the Constitutional Convention had to resolve: representation in the federal legislature, state's rights and responsibilities vs. federal rights and responsibilities, and, of course, slavery. They did not manage to adequately resolve those issues - that is why we fought the Civil War.

Well, for one, it meant we weren't a Monarchy or Dictatorship. It meant everyone had a hand in the creation of this country. Secondly, many Founding Father's were insistent on a separation of church and state. However, Evangelicals ran alot of the colonies. Compromises on adding a mention of God to the Constitution meant they wouldn't block other clauses that took out religious tests for official offices. Third, we are the Great Experiment. No one had done a country quite like ours (a democratic republic). Everyone had an idea on how it should work. A give and take was necessary to ensure that the colonies weren't lost to in-fighting and petty squabbling. They still had a war to fight, you know.

compromise is the centerpost of any truly free political system. The lack of compromise...which is way too common in Washington D.C. these days...leads, at best, to the lack of much true political progress for a nation. At worst, it leads...say in the case of the Sunni Arabs in pre-war Iraq...to a repressive, often murderous, regime. More dramatic yet, a continuous lack of compromise by the ruling power generally leads to rebellion...like the Revolutionary War against England that started this whole ball rolling. The founding fathers, because of the repression they endured under the King, understood pretty well the value of compromise in the politica system they were forming.

You had people from different backgrounds with different ideas. No one was going to completely abandon their beliefs and let the other guy have it all; thus, the only answer was to compromise.
