I saw a thing on "Super Nanny" once where she instructed the mom to put the child in his own bed, and then sit in the room (but DON'T get in his bed) and not leave after he fell asleep. The key was to get the child used to sleeping in his own bed alone. Once he gets used to falling asleep with the mom in the room, then they can progress to the mom leaving a little sooner every night until she's able to leave while he's still awake. Eventually, she was able to just tuck the child in and then leave immediately. (By the way, if the kid wakes up and comes into the parents room, do the same thing again....the key is to get him back into his own bed as soon as possible.)

I can't guarantee this from personal experience (I don't have kids), but it worked on the show :)

I lay down at night with my daughter until she was at least 10. This was our special time of night when we would read together and talk. I wouldn't have given up that time for anything. ( She is now 27 , married happily , and a lawyer in case you are wondering if this practice will make your child overlay attached.)The important thing is to make sure he gets in his own bed early enough that you can read with him, talk, etc. and once he is asleep - you can go about your own chores, time with your spouse etc. If you wait until adult bedtime - it won't work. Treasure every moment you have to bond with your child. They grow up so soon.

little by little, set the timer for 15 minutes one week, then 10 the next and keep doing that, by the end of the month, he should be okay (replace yourself with a new stuffed animal he can cuddle or hold)
