Seems that a dog is coming to my backyard at night and trying to dig or bury something. What can I do to keep it away?

Motion-sensor light? Anything Ultrasonic?

Easy answer: sprinkle a repellent around your yard, especially at the edges. Cayenne pepper is great for this. Your lawn and garden center may have a few more options, as well as a local veterinarian.

Medium answer: talk to the dog's owner about chaining it up, and make a formal complaint to the animal control officer.

Hard answer: put a fence around your yard that the dog can't jump over.

all those approaches are only "iffy" for a well seasoned veteran backyard garbage spreading dog....two approaches have worked for me in the past...set him up with somthing to eat, pile up a nice mound of dirt for a backstop in line of site with a window if you have neibours, stake his sorry butt out one night then blast him..i like a 22rifle with a lazer sight...have some big plastic bags on hand, bag him, then dump him in the local grocers garbage dumpster...the other approach is put out a nice big plate of wet dog food with the "coated" rat poison pellets like decon...mix in about 3 or 4 of the little boxes into the plate then set out his final feast...only problem with that method is u wind up killing all the wildlife and domestic animals in a 3 block radius lol....

My bet it isn't a dog at all but an animal digging for grubs or the like.

Call animal control and make a complaint. then you may have to put up a fence. have you ever had any dealings with electric fence. I used it on time on my neighbors dog
