First of all ANYBODY that is telling you that you cannot acces the MLS without a Realtor is LYING to you!
You can access MLS listings by going to www.realtor.com and search for properties all over the US. Depending where you are located there are also local MLS that might be available in your area. For example here in the Bay Area, California you can go to www.mlslistings.com.
FYI: Any of these websites DO NOT give you much of the information that you could get from a Realtor. You will not get specifics and you search is limited as well.
The best reason to have a Realtor representing you in the purchase is to have him/her look after your best interest and not be taken by the seller. There are many legalities that you need to keep in mind, BUT if you feel confident and are up to the challenge by all means do it, just be careful with what you do.
Good luck!

I am a real estate agent. Though it would be wise to consult a Realtor on the purchase of your new home, there are a number of services you can use to search for houses. The most obvious is Yahoo Real Estate. Another is www.realtor.com and www.century21.com
I would gather that you do not wish to use a realtor for one of two reasons. First is your trying to save money on commission. The second is you had a horrible Realtor in the past and do not wish to go through the insanity again.
If your trying to save money consider this. A Realtor is a trained negotiator. They are capable of saving you several thousand dollars in many different ways. Furthermore they can protect you from liability in the event of a lawsuit saving you what could be several hundred thousand dollars.
I will not lie about the second. Bad realtors do exist. They mostly hang out at discount brokers though they exist in every area of the real estate business. If you are worried about this consider using a full service broker. They have a much higher standerd of practice. It is worth noting that the Seller pays the commission in this service, so you, as a buyer are not required to pay an agent.
As far as getting into MLS with agent access it will not happen unless you get a real estate license and join the Association of Realtors. I do not wish to upset you over this, but as a full service Realtor I feel obligated to tell you the truth.
Good luck in your Real Estate endevours,

Having a Realtor as a Buyer's agent costs you nothing, so why not use one? You using one will NOT effect the cost of the home you are buying, if you plan to by a home from someone who is using an agent and heres why -
The agent who listed the home is the one who splits the commission the seller has already agreed to pay. So if you buy a home with out a realtor and the commisiion the listing agent contracted for was say 6%, that agent keeps all 6%! If you use a realtor, the listing agent will give up some of that 6%, most times its 1/2, but they can give what ever % they want to give. Also, you would be buying a home form someone who is repersented - why wouldn't you want to be repersented as well?
Need a good Realtor?
If In Alabama - e-mail me
If not in Alabama - I can still recommend an experienced Realtor from your area that will give you OUTSTANDING service! I work with a network of Realtors across North America.

Why do you not want to use a professional for assistance in what is probably the biggest investment you'll ever make? Would you go to court if you were being sued for a large sum of money without an attorney? Not to mention, having a buyers agent represent you costs you absolutely nothing (their fee is paid by the seller if/when you buy).
Anyways, in answer to your question, no you cannot gain access to the MLS without being a licensed Realtor. You can look thru some websites like century21.com, and realtor.com, but they don't contain EVERY LISTING. You may be missing out on a great home by not going with an agent.
BTW....If you ever buy a one of my listings, I would strongly urge you to have an agent represent you!

Yes you can, but as a realtor I am not going to tell you how.what I will tell you is that no realtor is going to show it so whats the point? We make our living of our commissions, and with a zillion other listings to show our buyers why show the one where there is no commission? Oh, and even if you offer like 1 or 2% for a buyer agent sale, most still wont show it because the idea still takes away from our bread and butter. Quit being cheap and hire a Realtor, trust me its worth your money. Many headaches come with seling your own home.

In California if the seller has signed an Exclusive Right to Sell contract, which is the case for most residential properties, then the seller will have to pay both sides (seller’s and buyer’s agents’ commissions) unless the buyer is a member of the local MLS. There is no financial benefit to not use a qualified and licensed realtor to protect your interest.

The simple answer is NO, Reqaltor.com has most listings from every state and generally are a week behind the local MLS systems.
Snce the MLS is a private organization, you cannit access it unless you belong to it and you have to have a real estate license to belong to it.
Another note - most states have a very good (much better than Realtor.com) public search, search for it in the state you are in.

locally, realtors probably have a code, just ask for it from a realtor, tell the agent you want to browse around on your own over the weekend, let them know if you see anything by Monday
