We already have permanent bases in Iraq, we started them pretty much as soon as bush called mission acomplished. We're also going to build the worlds largest embassy there that is completely self sufficient, it's own water, power, everything it needs.
We need to stay to protect not only our oil but our stepping stone for further attacks in the middle east. We plan to stay no matter what the gov't says.
There are countless sources. Just search permanent bases in iraq.

After the Korean War, we put permenant bases in Korea, even though they are autonomous in regards to governing their people.
After WWII we put bases in Germany and Japan, After the Spanish American War, we put bases in Cuba and the Phillipines.
This is just the latest example of Americans putting a more stable location for their troops are are continuing to serve in the area of operation.

If you look at the trouble the US had basing for the invasion of Afghanistan you'll see the need for a non-Arab base in the region.
Iraq is a very strategic location for the US - especially with the stuff going on in Iran.
Don't say I like any of it though...

We have permanent bases in Germany, S.Korea, Japan. They operational support bases for quick response to emergencies to protect our common interests with the host countries. With all the turmoil in the mideast it's smart to keep a support base there.

Who said we are? What do you call permanent. Bythe way, the president said we could be there in some fashion up to ten years. So we would need bases. By the way the democrats agreed to this.

It's pretty scary if it's true. Maybe we couldn't find another country near there for a base. Do you have some references we all could have a peek at, or did a little birdy tell you this?
