Sometimes when I have a book I'm not sure I want to read, I'll start in the middle or towards the end. This may make it easier to get involved in the story since you aren't bogged down with lots of introductions, i.e., stuff actually happens. Now that you have some context and hopefully some interest, you can then go back to the beginning to find out how it all began and to make sure you understand the theme.

I haven't read Tale of Two Cities in ages, but surprisingly it is pretty interesting. Plus of course, you get that terrific line, It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.

The beginning of the book may be difficult for you because it is written in a flamboyant style. Basically, Dickens is giving you some historical background. I don't have the book in front of me, so I am not sure just what the second chapter consists of. My advice to you is to purchase Cliff or Monarch Notes from any bookstore. Either will summarize the chapters and will explain what is happening. Use it as a guide as you read. DO NOT use either to replace your reading because neither will give you all you need regarding details you may be asked to remember. Stick with it. It is a fabulous novel about the French Revolution, and things will become clearer to you as you read the book assisted by one of the study guides I mentioned.

Good Luck!!!

Perhaps because it is a ripping good story full of action, adventure, romance, history, and memorable characters. Who can forget the bloodthirsty and ruthless Mme. deFarge knitting at the foot of the guillotine as people are executed? This is the only book by Dickens that I can bear to read. The others are just awful IMHO.
