If this happened to you or someone you know, I wouldn't say anything about suing the company to anyone IF you value the job.
I was fired after I got on the wrong side of a company suck-up boss, on a fake sexual harassment thing. Someone got people to lie. My lawyer said no case.
So those human resource people who seem so nice and friendly, are REALLY protecting the company from problems, including law suits.
I would love to know how they do this in the files. but I'd be they will find some phony reason to get rid of you. It might be a minor thing, but they'll make it big.
I agree with just telling security and maybe your boss, and acting more curious than mad. Its all this corporate BULLSHIT that pisses me off!

Probably not sue but you can inform your supervisor what happened. Security and HR personnel should know about it as well. My wallet got stolen at work once and company security instituted the picture i.d.

Highly doubtful. Only under certain conditions is that applicable. If you left it unattended and NOT in a locked area such as a safe, locker, etc. it is almost impossible.
