SSN is just an abbreviation for Social Security Number. They use it to run their background checks. Some advise not putting it on there until you're close to being offered the job, but I tend to say put it on there initially. Most employers can be trusted to keep it private. And besides, they might wonder why you're so afraid of giving it to them. For example, they might begin to think that you don't trust them, which isn't going to make them overly want you on their staff.

Legally, they can't do that, but the thought can cross their minds.

Your social security number...three digits, a dash, two digits, a dash, four digits. It is the most common vehicle for SERIOUS cases if identity theft. I would be reluctant to give it out on an application.

Your social security number.

If you are not familar with what that is, you probably shouldn't be giving it out.

If it is for a job or school or something, ask your parents.

Never give it out. If they need it, they can ask for it later but it's really not necessary. But it's your social security number.
