A 13 year old should volunteer instead of getting a paid job. Volunteering teaches more skills than McDonalds. The personal references are also more suitable for a future job and for college. I
Volunteering teaches the 13 year old that working isn't all about money but also about doing something you believe in and being proud of yourself.
As a parent, you can compensate your child for volunteering. Consider it a donation to a good cause.

As my mother used to say, "El arbolito desde pequeñito" which literally means, "The tree from little". The message is that the younger you teach them, the better they'll turn out.
In other words, 13 years old isn't too young. In some cultures, children start working practically when they take their first steps.
Now does this mean that we should encourage child labor? No. Personally I would prefer not to have to interact with teenagers in the customer service, retail or restaurant sectors, because usually when you do, you usually get lousy service, as they haven't developed a true work ethic.
On the other hand, if kids were trained early that the customer is king, we wouldn't be having the problems with teenagers that we're having at every turn we attempt to do business.
Yes, by all means, send the little ****ers to work, but do so as part of their educational process, and do so from elementary school where they could be put to work for a couple of hours after school.

A 13 year old should get a job so that they can earn their own money and save up for important things that they want. It helps them with responsibility too.
