Well, the Italian player got what he was after - he got Zidane mad, ZIdane blew his cool, Zidane got ejected from the game.

Oh, yeah, and the Italians won.

It's not sportsmanlike, but it's done to some extent by players all the time. They try to make you mad so you'll make a mistake and make it easier for them to win.

If you fall for it - you're as stupid as them.

It's such a delicate question...
I think that as a sportsman, Zidane should have put the game above everything else, and dealt with the abuse later (in a very highly publicized manner, that is)... He should have focused his anger towards a positive action instead of a negative one.
As a man, he should also be responsible for his actions... Many people get harassed every day (for different reasons, not only racism) and hopefully, they do not react like he did...
But as a human, a passionate human being, there are things that you cannot accept without reacting... It seems to me that what happened resulted from many abuses that built up and that he could not take any more (la goutte qui a fait deborder le vase?)… All I can say is that I feel for him… It’s a terrible way of ending a career and he needs to be remembered as the great star he is…
Well, to me, the French team are the world champions (uncalled penalty)… and Zizou needs to apologize and explain, and explain again, but make his point… When will whites (like me) stop this stupid mind war????? Zizou, you’re the best… Sorry…

Zidane was not right to headbutt Materazzi it was not the right time or place for violence or discussion, what is true though is that Zidane is one of the worlds greatest players and an ambassador of the sport, Matterazzi is a hooligan thug who if he had not played football would be a debt collector breaking peoples thumbs.

Whatever was said to Zidane had to be very personal and cruel for him to act the way he did, and had he thought logically he would not have done it, but he is human, and humans have emotions, he acted upon his emotion.

Materazzi is a VERY dirty football player and does not deserve anything in football, he does not play with the correct respect of competition. Please check out link in source below.

I think the incident had nothing to do with the result. Italy would still have won IMO.

No! I think he should have been prepared for a wide range of cheap shots, especially at a crucial time. He is a soccer player. It is unfortunate that this type of verbal harrassment occurs in organized as well as in amateur sports. It takes place along a lot of lines, not just race, culture or ethnicity. People out to sobotage seem willing to prey on almost any kind of vulnerability. I do not agree with it. However, it seems to be accepted as part of the norm. Players need to be instructed in how to handle them.

I already answered a similar question to this one, almost the same way. I would like to hear what both playaers have to say to any inquiry that takes place. I think I will stop answering questions about him, at least until more is known directly form Zidane and Materazzi.

Absolutely justified to do what Zidane did and to get sent off in disgrace.

That's the price you pay for acting like a dickhe@d when there is 10 minutes to go for the last and most important match in your life. No excuse to let your team and country down like he did.

Well deserved RED card.

Rax : According to you Zidane should have hit him in the face, then according to your logic, it would be ok for Materazzi to take out a gun in retaliation and shoot Zidane. Where does it end.

Materazzi got what he deserved and so did Zidane. Well done Ref.

Hard to decide if Zidane is right or wrong as we did not know what's the exchanges between him and the Italian player... That guy admitted he insulted Zidane and thus getting the head butt.

Anyway the FIFA is investigating the matter....

Hell Yeah! I don't know what Marco Materazzi said but man it must have been something incredibly insulting for Zidane to risk getting a red card. Besides it was the only exciting thing to happen the entire game.
I maybe a yank but wasn't football once a contact sport? Does anyone remember Vinnie Jones' nut crusher?

I think whatever was said by Materazzi had to be very personal and cruel for Zidane to have acted the way he did. It was very unusual and out of character for Zidane to have been so openly upset and angry. He's always been one of the greatest players of all time in my opinion, and to have done such a stupid act would have had to be out of immense provocation. He's still a great player, and what people will remember is that Italy won and France lost.

Hahahah. Look, I'm not saying that the Italian player should have said that or that he was right or anything. Zidane should have controlled his tempter better though, after all, the Italian just said that to piss him off.

Stupid Zidane and his french temper! It cost him the world cup.

Viva Italia!!!
