Personally, I liked plain T-shirts. They pull up easily, and because they're made of a knit, they tend to pop back down to keep you covered up. I wear them most of the time while nursing.
For dressing up a bit, I just go for a skirt and shirt. My favorites are a peasant shirt because they are loose enough to pull up easily to nurse and again have enough fabric to drape down and keep me covered.
Another option is to wear overalls or a jumper cut low under the arm. Then you can pull up your shirt and nurse through the side.
If you absolutely *have* to have special nursing clothes, you can either make your own or have someone make them for you. If you sew even a little, friends have told me that Elizabeth Lee patterns (see sources section below) are simple to make. Or you can buy a regular dress wtih a deep pleat in front and have it altered. I have put in a long buttonhole (about 12" long) in a pleat for a nursing dress. Again, you can have this done by a friend or professional seamstress if you don't sew.

Try eBay, motherhood maternity's clearance items, and motherhood maternity has links to other stores as well...sale items can be really well priced. Also, just find some loose fitting button down tops, low cut tank tops or camisoles to wear under another shirt ( you can wear a regular shirt with a camisole under it, just pull the shirt up and the camisole down and you stay fully covered). Also, I made myself a very lose knitted blanket that I could lay over my shoulder and chest to cover myself and my daughter, nobody could see through it, but I could lift the edge slightly to peak in myself. The lose knitting keeps it from being hot.

i haven't got "nursing clothing". I easily have pull-up tops, camisoles, and tanks that I placed on lower than a blouse and it fairly works high quality. All from objective or a the consignment keep. they're fairly expensive and fairly no longer fairly well worth the money. I easily have by no potential necessary them and characteristic breastfed 2 children- and am breastfeeding our 15 month previous now. strong success!

You don't have to wear a storebought nursing shirt at all. I never used nursing clothing - if I felt "exposed" I just used a thin receiving blanket to keep myself covered while the baby nursed. Or you could make your own nursing shirt:
EASY NURSING SHIRT:
Layer one crop top, blouse, shirt, etc. over an old T-shirt or tank top (mix or match colours!). Cut two nursing slits in the T-shirt and hem edges. The top layer shirt will provide discreet coverage, yet your baby will still have easy access to nurse.

A friend of mine bought a knit pancho and uses it when she breastfeeds in public. It covers her and her baby completely, and has enough room for her baby to nurse comfortably. I bought all my nursingwear from expressiva.com. I wouldn't call it inexpensive, but they have nice things, and since it's hard to come by nursingwear in regular stores (like Wal-Mart or K-Mart), it may be your best bet. Also try search for Motherhood stores at a nearby mall. They carry a small nursingwear section.

You dont really need to wear a nursing shirt, its just as easy to wear a regular shirt as long as you can pull it up to nurse. Just make sure you have a blanket with you for out in public. One thing I do suggest is a nursing bra though! You can find good ones at JCPenney.
