I actually don't know why I bothered asking this question. I don't need a lecture in education, I just know 67 % of my friends didn't go to college and they either own their own successful dot com companies or some other company and education wasn't needed. I don't think you need education to get ahead. I think if you apply yourself, and work hard you can acheive most things. Actually my sister and bro inlaw, have traveled with Phanom of the Opera, and Les Mis. For years, and have played with many many musical celebrities. They still do this, and just came back from India performing for a very important figure there. This is a hobby, nice hobby to have huh?

I went college. I delivered freight to WSU.

Seriously, I never attended college and I am a Senior Business Systems Analyst. I travel all over the world and earn a good six-figure income plus bonus. What I missed out in a university I make up for in my unending quest for educating myself.

Yes, a college education is important, it prepares you to support yourself for the rest of your life. Teaches you how to write properly, speak properly, critical thinking skills, philosophy, psychology etc. You also get fun course and interaction between you and the other students. You can create your own degree in college. You get a well rounded education in college. You don't usually have to work on the weekends when you have a college education. You get respect, and paid more money for your years of education. If you don't get an education you will be flipping hamburgers, and making minimum wage. It's getting harder every year with taxes, and changes in programs. You need an education. You're happy you got yours right? A college education is something they can't take away from you. So don't knock a college education down.

You may not use the education you recieved at college, but most employers will not hire a person without a four year degree. It doesn't matter what the degree is in, but they want to see that you can commit to something long enough to finish. So yes, it is important; even if you don't work in the same field that you went to school for.

College is no guarantee of success. There are successful people who have done well without a degree...

On average, a degree is needed to open doors to employment - unless you have specific skills employers use filters to cull applicants and degrees are an easy pick.

Now once you are on the job your employment record becomes paramount. So accountability and working hard is important.

Regardless of study areas college teaches you learning skills in the face of ambiguity - sometimes that is what gets you places rather than specific rote memory of course you take.

Im not using my masters - Information Tech. but i am using some of my my bachelor skills- which is in Business. I do however understand where your coming from after i grad. with my masters i wanted to sell both degrees cause ...i felt they were useless and even though i have a good job (not based on any of the degrees!) i downplayed my education to get it. I think more than anything in college you should strive to create relationships ... im not saying neglect to study...but in life the relationships will count more...

Going to a school of music, I would imagine, doesn't open up all that many job opportunities anyway. Studying nursing, engineering, computer science or something like that would be a lot more important if you're going into those fields.

Try getting a decent paying job without one, and I mean enough money to pay for a home, food, wife and kids, etc. etc. etc.

I *am* using my education and make good money and I still can't get that far ahead.

The issue is not using what you study, it's doing something you like. When you enjoy the job, it's a lot easier to do.

That has to do with the major you chose. Not the importance of getting a college education.

Thats your fault for getting a degree, and then getting out of school and not going into that field. Thats a big waste on your part.

what degree do you have? if you arent using your education then you are doing something wrong...the purpose of getting a degree in a specific field is to work in that field.
