People are racist because they were raised that way or have had a lot of bad experiences with a particular race. I had a friend who was never racist then he moved to a school and was the only Hispanic in an all black school. He was jumped everyday and then he dropped out. Now he thinks all blacks are racists so he doesn't trust any black people even ones that are nice to him.
As far as why do they think they are better, it is because they believe that their race is better at things they view as important. A lot of racists will say Asians are better at math but being good at math does not make you a better person. A lot of white racists will say Blacks are better at sports but being good at sports does not make you a better person. I am not going to list what white people think they are better at because I do not want to get slammed as being racist.

My personal belief is that racism comes from some sort of obsessive compulsive disorder where people need to classify everything and everybody. Hence, to a racist, people become separated in different kinds, types, races, or whatever you want to call that, each with their own little niche and place in a precise hirerarchic order where he or she stands at the top. Also, typically, just like with other forms of OCD, a racist will pick up on absolutely everything, even the slightest details and use them to back up even the most absurd theories. so, for instance, black people run faster since Karl Lewis ran really fast, white people are more clever as Mozart was a genius, etc.

Ignorance, stemming from various reasons. One main reason for racism is racist parents who pass it on to their children. A person who is racist can feel threatened, feel inferior, may have a need for power. Many other reasons. That's why there will always be war. Think about this: One of our astronauts (I forgot which one) said from space it is weird because you "don't see the lines that divide countries" -- like when you look at a map. See, we are all one, on one earth. This little, tiny planet floating around in space. We need each other, we need peace so we can concentrate on saving our people and our planet.

People, in general, are very insecure. There's this sort of social statues that people like to perceive themselves as being under and being that. They like to compare themselves with others. So when they look at people of a different race or culture, they look at that difference as being bad. Hence you have insecure people making ill begotten judgments on others just so they can feel better about themselves. It's sad really.

Well that's their mentality. But are all Americans racist in someway? they think they are the best thing in the world, just because they live in a superpower, they immediately assume they have the supreme authority to pick a war with anyone and conquer their countries?

There are....different classes of "PEOPLE" and that is where the racism needs to be focused, not on the colour of your skin, but how stupid you actually are as an individual...
Im sorry but the class of people would shift dramatically, if that happened....because there are so many ignorant people in the world...It would do us some good..

Due to zero empathy. When you are unable to understand the other (due to cultural issues or religion), you think the other is dumb or does not deserve what he/she has. Hate then appear in a form of racism. Only way to solve it: more education to be able to understand the other (in one side) and to raise opportunities (in the other side); only problem: takes a lot of generations and no one is very interested in investing in our grand-grand-grand sons.
