My Wife and I want to take a road trip from Burlington, Vermont to some place near the ocean. We also would like to spend a day at Hershey Park in PA. We were originaly thinking about Ocean City in MD but we not sure if there is enough to do there. Since we live in New England, we have do trips to Maine and New hampshire and we don't want to do that again for this trip. Please help!

Ocean City Maryland is a really developed resort town and I live nearby. It has wonderful beaches with some of the best quality sand on the east coast. There are a number of activites, ranging from fishing, watersports, golf, an active nightlife, amusement parks, a boardwalk for walking and shopping, and many nature activities as well. Outside of Ocean City is Ocean Downs Raceway, a horse racing track for pacers and trotters, which has a low key, family atmosphere.
Parts of the Jersey shore also offer similar things, such as Wildwood and Cape May. Rehobeth in Delaware is smaller but close enought o Ocean City that you could look at staying there. North of Wildwood in New Jersey the quality of the beaches starts to go down, though of course Atlantic City offers casinos if that is of interest to you.

New Jersey gets a bad rap - sure it's home to some of the most god-awful crime-ridden, grungy industrial cities in the United States, but other parts of New Jersey do justice to the "Garden State" sobriquet.

Some of the beaches of New Jersey are crowded, overpriced and extremely commercial, but other beaches are quiet, laid back and serene. You might want to consider someplace like Spring Lake, New Jersey, which is home to a number of gourmet restaurants and boutique shops, as well as some real top notch bed and breakfast getaways.

Keep in mind - the more there is to do in an area (think Orlando!), the more popular and the more crowded. It's difficult to find a quiet, serene, out of the way place with lots to do. It's usually one or the other. The advantage of staying in a place like Spring Lake is that it's only 75 miles or so from both NYC and Philadelphia, so you can always make a day trip to someplace "bustling", then return to the quiet of a beach town.

You may also want to consider the beaches in Virginia and Delaware - from some of those beaches, you can easily reach D.C., which has a never-ending array of places to go and things to do. I've stayed in some wonderful hotels and bed and breakfasts in the Washington area, though rarely combined it with a beach vacation.

Not a personal recommendation, but a couple of random Spring Lake sites that turned up, listed below....

Enjoy your trip!

I live in New Jersey -- we have great beaches. You don't mention kids, so you might want to try Cape May. There's Six Flags Great Adventure if you like rides; plus it's got a drive-through safari and a water park. Here's the official State travel site:

Hershey is about 2 hours away from the ocean, by the way, so I'm not sure if you wanted to travel during your vacation or stay in one area the whole time.

Myrtle Beach, S.C. ...the best of everything. Stay around 2lst Ave. North and Ocean Blvd. You will be able to walk to some of the attractions and restaurants and it is right on the ocean.

Try Georgia ...there are some islands off the coast that I heard are absolutely beautiful and enchanting. Or you can try Savannah, GA I heard that is one beautiful city and it is on the waterfront. Someone told me Charleston SC is a nice place too, anyway along the South Carolina coast is nice.

The charm, prices and beauty are good factors....*smiles*

Unless you like MOBS of people (and very young at that), don't go to Ocean City. Nagshead in NC or any beach in South Carolina are very beautiful.
