Well since it is a long distance event you can get alot better by working on the little things: turns, streamlines, kicking, breathing, starts, finishes, etc. If you fo faster by a half second per 50 (thats very little) you will drop 10 sec in your whole 1000! Little things are what makes races exciting and anything is possible. Also your negative attitude is not going to help you achieve your goal, there is an inspirational poem and it goes like this:

If you think you are beaten, you are
If you think you dare not, you don't
If you like to win, but you think you can't
It's almost certain you won't.

If you think you'll lose, you've lost
For out in the world you'll find
Success begins with a fellow's will
It's all in the state of mind.

Life's battles don't always go
To the stronger or faster man
But sooner or later the man who wins
Is the man who thinks he can.

Good luck!

lol holy crap, that's gonna be tough.

I sure hope you have some competitive experience because this will only pertain to you if it does. If you are completely new to the sport, you can always try, but you will need professional guidance to get that good.

1. Milk all the distance you can out of your turns. DO NOT BREATHE IN OR OUT of your turns. You should take two uninterrupted strokes into the wall and take at least one stroke out until you breathe.

2. Race someone that can go under 13 minutes, not by a lot, but enough so you are sure that if you can beat them, you got it. The competition gives you a guage on how fast to go while you are going.

3. REACH REACH REACH with your arms and pull all the way down.

4. Breath at least every 3 or 4 strokes. You might be out of breath because you might be breathing too much.

5. Have confidence in yourself. If you don't think you can do it, you won't.

6. Train your butt off. Do LOTS of distance sets (200s, 400s, a 1000 here and there) Time them and get them as fast as they can go. Treat every set like a race.

Better technique is the only thing that will get you there. Only the training in the world can not make up for good technique. In fact, by training without good technique, you will be training to swim with poor technique and you will swim slower. This advice comes from the swimming coach at Stanford University. Every year by the coaches say the same thing to parents of swimmers on our swim team. When you train, you must train with proper technique or you time will not improve.

Find someone (a knowledgable coach) who is willing to watch you swim and tell you how to improve your technique. They have to watch you swim in order to help you.

BTW - A good friend of mine swam at Stanford. He swam the 1000 yard freestyle in under 9 minutes. He has given this advice to many people in the past.

practice practice practice. training will be painfull and u'll get tiered, bit that is really the point of it. u must increase ur stamina, and increase ur lung capacity. when practicing swim at a constant speed and take less breaths as u can. start swimming 1500 yards(or so, i use metric system) at a meduim level the n increase the speed every time u do it. pluss u must swim short distances at very high speed for example 100 meters 10 times, at the rate of 1:30 or 1:40, u must do each less than the givin time, and take the rest of the time to rest(until ull "rate" time is over" in a couple of weeks u'll be fine. constraite on ur style, cuz without style u'll be flipp-flopping in the water and u won't get any where, u must keep ur ody steady at all times, ur legs must work as fast as they can and ur strokes must be fast and strong.

this is my info, i have been a swimmer for about 9 years now . but a 13 year old girl has asked a question much similar to urs and Wayne Goldsmith has answered her question: http://coachesinfo.com/category/swimming/102/

Yea! have someone throw a shark into the pool with you; that should help your technique and cut minutes off your time. It will also help speed up your exit time at the end of the swim..

The best way to do this is to start training ahead of time. Take a run every day, increase your stamina. Lift weights to increase your upper body strength. There is no magical way to just make it happen. It takes practice, dedication, and training.

well y ou first need to say I CAN DO IT not i can't do it if you insist that y ou can't do it then you will never be able to do it.... secondly you should go swiming and practice as much as possible "practice makes perfect" also lift weights in order fo your arms to become stronger if you do not have weights then 20 oz. water bottles work perfectly... just don't give up and give it your all oh yea and do breathing exercises
