Could they use our debt as leverage to attack Taiwan?

China doesnt want it back, at least, not all at once. The trillion dollars are a trillion, becuase the dollar is strong. If china starts selling dollar (basically thats the economists way of asking for your money back), dollar may fall. If it falls, then china doesnt own a trillion dollar, its values go down.

But if we continue to be a deficit funded economy (selling bonds that bank of china, taiwans etc buy to support the dollar), then I'm sure, soon china will have enough of dollar, and will not want any more. And then what'll happen - is a million, oh trillion dollar question!!

Our interest rates go out the ROOF. The government will have to borrow every penny the country owns and there will be no money for americans to borrow. Think about a 50% interest rate on a mortgage.

Well, that could be bad. But maybe we'll pay up on that debt just like the rest of world pays up theirs back to us.
