I've taken a large interest in the Vietnam War recently.
The terrain, geography and people may be different but some of the tactics and policies seem identical.
Isn't some of the tactics now being used in Iraq was originally used by the Viet Cong? Didn't Viet Cong forces bomb U.S. bases and were labeled as terrorists as well? Wasn't there a massacre other than My Lai related to Fallujah or Haditha? Lastly, why do people recoil at the thought of Iraq becoming another Vietnam?

I'm not being sacrastic with this question either. I was curious to know if what some people see as liberal negativism in comparing Iraq to Vietnam was true or not. All comments are welcomed including Vietnamese viewpoints.

If you are specifically talking about warfare, the logistics and terrain are completely different. In Vietnam, the dense jungle coupled with tunnels made it easy for the Viet Cong to stage ambushes, and to retreat. The troops in that war were mostly draftees and were not as well trained as the troops we have now. Many were over there involuntarily. There was an abundance of drugs and at the time, the military was not screening as they do now. Field medicine back then was rudimentary compared to today's standards, not to mention analogue based technology and communications. Today's troops are much better trained. Troops battled troops in Viet Nam whereas Troops are now battling terrorists. It is difficult to see the enemy coming, and explosive detection is challenging. I really do not have a view as far as the political ramifications you are asking about. In terms of strategy, terrain and troops, these are the differences I see in this war. I hated war then and I hate it now. It breaks my heart to see our young men and women in harms way and getting injured. But since they are there, I support them and pray for every one of them. I

I hope not.
There could never be a war like the vietnam war.It was barbaric and inhuman on both sides
War is stupid.
A way for the dictators to cull the country and give them power over the masses
. Not one of us has the right to take another human life.
I agree it is all based on lies.
Both wars.

Iraq will never be another Vietnam. For one thing, we failed to convince the Vietnamese to go.
