Montreal is a festival town in the summer. I believe the Intl Comedy festival is on when you will be here, and the Intl fireworks competition is on too (you can watch it free from the Cartier bridge).

Other fun stuff:
-Old Montreal and Chinatown. Take an evening cruise down the St-Laurent river. Or a romantic ride in a caleche (horse-drawn carriage)
- Hiking on Mont Royal
- Cruising down the Main, aka walking on St-Laurent Blvd from Sherbrooke to Mt. Royal, then hand a right on Mt-Royal to return on St-Denis. Fun shops, interesting people watching.
- Dinner and fun on Crescent Street
- A day at the botanical gardens-biodome-olympic stadium

Montreal is a great food town, btw...

I"ve been told the best thing about Montreal, especially when you're 18, is the amazing night life. I suggest hanging out at bars and downtown at night, just don't look for trouble.

You arrive in the city with FESTIVALS in the downtown core free to the public. You won't need to go far if you choose to stay in the city. Theres the Just for Laughs / Juste pour Rire Comedy Festival, Jazz Fest ends before you get here but its a city with tons of public access.

I read all the answers and I must say, avoid Crescent street and downtown. They have no character, you could be in any city in North America. Go to St-Laurent street, the Plateau, the Mile End, Bernard Street. As for bars, try Reservoir on Duluth, L'Assommoir on Bernard, Plan B, Bily Kun, and Barraca on Mont-Royal. For dancing, go to LaTulipe on Papineau, it's wicked! And you have to go to Le Continental Restaurant on St-Denis for dining.
