The only way to know for sure if it is broken, is to get an x-ray done. In the meantime, apply ice, elevate the foot, and rest. Another thing you can do is tape the toe to the next toe over using padding in between the toes. It may need to be kept taped like this for 2-4 weeks to heal.

It is just jammed. If it was broken, you wouldn't be able to move it. If you want to, you can try this. I must warn you, it will be painful but will feel a little better afterwards. Try and pull the toe as hard and straight as you can. You will feel a sensation, a little pain, and then a dull pain. If you want, get a toe "splint" that will keep it straight while it heals. Sorry you hurt yourself!

very tough to tell from the information you gave, sometimes breaks will cause some brusing .. even if its broken there is nothing a doctor can do for a toe, but it is also possible if it is a break for it to be further back into the foot.. you need to get it looked at..
ive personally broken 6 different toes.. some twice, and it looks feels and reacts differently each time

Reasonable chance it's broken. Get it X-Rayed if you can afford it, if it's broken they can't do anything more than tape it, but you'll want to make sure you start moving it after a certain point or else your toe will go permenantly stiff.

With no disrespect to the medical profession, I think that if you saw several doctors, each would have a different opinion and would prescribe different remedies which tells me that what you think about it and how you react to it is the most important factor.
In many years of intensive training I have learned to trust my instincts and prayers which means that sometimes I might try to run very gently and sometimes I might swim or ride a bike or else stay in bed depending on how I felt.

Doctors won't give you a cast for a broken toe, and I once broke it using the Eye Toy and lived with it. Try using slippers as your normal shoe to get through it and once it gets better get back to the shoe you use everyday.

I would just try to tape it/cushion it so it's tolerable. The doctor wouldn't do much more for you even if it is broken. It will feel better in a few days. If it's broken, it should heal within the month.

If its swollen AND stiff, you have a very high chance of it being broken.
Only a doc could honestly tell you.

Could be broken or just strained. I have had that happen before and the swelling went down in a few days. The first day it was black and blue.
