It's quite simple, really. America has been looking for a reason to go to war with a strong Islamic nation for some time. You see, if the US topples the previous government, then we get to help build the new one. Once that new government is built, it owes favors and alliegeances to the US government. As a result, we hold more sway in the politics of the Middle East, an area of the world where we are reviled. Oh, and easier access to oil doesn't hurt much either.

We went to war with Iraq specifically because they were the easiest target. To those of you who mentioned links to Al Qaeda and possession of WMDs, all of those accusations have been proven false. See my sources for more details.

Well the Al -Quaeda link was a lie The link to 9-11 was a lie the W.M.D.s were a lie the ones that were found we already knew about after the 1st Iraq war. We got Saddam out of power so there is really no reason for us to be there any More except that Mr Bush wants to make sure that the puppet regime he helped set up will stay under his control and that all his buddies that have defense contracts make every last dollar they can out of this .

The administration said it was because:
1) Iraq violated UN sanctions and made no efforts to comply.
2) Iraq had WMDs.
3) Iraq was a threat to the US

However, now it seems this reasoning was weak at best and appears to have been more likely for the following reasons:
1) To secure American influence in the middle east (replace leaders with those aligned with the US.)
2) Such influence would ensure low oil prices for the US.
3) Our oil companies and other businesses that have the President's ear would profit.
4) Those invested in the above companies would benefit (which includes Cheney).
5) To seek vengeance on Saddam for attempting to assassinate Bush Sr and basically thumbing their nose at the U.S.
6) To provide a critical vantage point for American Troops to be stationed in the Middle East, making it easier to observe terrorist cells and their components in neighboring countries. This would allow the US to be able to attack quickly, either before or after a terrorist attack on US property.

None of these reason are noble. We have been misled by the administration. The war on Iraq was unjust and may cripple chances for peace in the near future.

It's not the oil. If so, how does the US action in Iraq support that it's for the oil. It doesn't.

This real world of ours isn't Disney's. 9/11 proved that.

So if you want an honest answer...The US is in Iraq because Clinton was a failure in dealing with previous terrorist attacks during his administration. His ignoring the problem only made it worse.

I believe the 'powers that be' in America have a list of contries to invade/exploit/conquer/etc., for various reasons. Since if America became imperialistic it would unite the world against them, they need something to pass off as a reason to deal with one of their targets. The media is a tool in this way, extemely beneficial. I support some American actions that have outraged others - in order to run a country, you need to make compromises and sacrifices and seeing each 'subject' as a person with wants dreams and desires makes the job incredibly hard. Seeing them as numbers and data makes it easier. I believe Americans are not ready to rule themselves, and I am searching for the answer why - why do they act in this way, when many other countries have it slightly easier, and have different philosophies that are ingrained into many of its people? but I am unsure- I live in New York City and consider myself a New Yorker, but not an American, because I do not fully understand them.

1. Terrorists attacked us first! Remember 9/11.

2. WMDs, many have forgotten that before 9/11 their was a huge controversy about Saddam Hussein harboring WMDs. In spite of UN "inspections", he totally lied and said there were none and those that were suspect? were to have already been destroyed...
but, "Looky what we found!"....

3. To free a people (even when we don't agree with their culture) from tyranny. Freedom becomes selfish if we believe we are the only ones who deserve it...

It's all about the oil, is not just a clever saying, its reality. Next time try voting for an honest man, like Ralph Nadar or Green Party when given the chance. Another good choice is Hillary Clinton.

To line the pockets of Bush and his party!

Look at the Vice-president...he made a fortune because we are there and destroyed Iraq, now his companies are getting the contracts to rebuild it.

Money is also going to Bush, probably in a Swiss account.
