I assume DOD means Department of Defense. I don't know this for certainty in your case. Every government job I've ever known of used a prescribed pay structure. This would be for "civilian" jobs as well, such as postal workers, air traffic controllers, etc. The GS system. You'd be pretty high up on the GS scale as a physician, I'd say. On the face of it I think you'd fall into the GS system and your pay would be non-negotiable. You'll have to ask them during the interview process. I imagine if they're interested in you they'll bring it up.

the answer is yes if you are going for a direct commission and have a needed specialty,i know little about civ contractor or uniformed health service(under the sgr general).I work near madigan army med ctr @ ft lewis and being crass and nosey helps-lol i started asking obviously young majors (if you are a 30yr old field grade officer,0-4 and above, driving a $60K auto somethings UP ) what was the DEAL as it were and some are pretty forthcoming,it boils down to your speciality and the needs of the army ,if you are just a good doctor(i know this seems caviler cause i aint no doctor) you get capt.(0-4) pay and an ok bounus if you are obgyn you get 0-4 and BIGGER bounus if you are BRAIN SURGON or some real cool doctor from some real cool doctor place they will submit your name to congress along with other doctors they need/want and get you MAJOR or LTC and a $HITLOAD of ca$h

Very little wiggle room with the DOD. They like to tell you what's what and don't like opinions. Especially if you're entry level.

I say there is ALWAYS room for negotiating at least SOMETHING about the job, money, benefits, location, etc., but it must be BEFORE YOU ACCEPT the postion.
