Well this may sound a little progressive but I think the key idea is to downplay any US involvement in the situation. Have Japan cut off aid to the North through use of naval vessels and air patrols. Use the US Navy to strategically and surgically eliminate tactical targets such as missle silos and power plants. That should cause enough unrest within the north so that either Kim Jung Il goes into exile or is overrun by his own people. Then Have the south overtake countrol in the area.

This is the only country where I believe negotiation is futile. Kim Jung Il is waiting for a war, he wants Japan and the US. Of course that will bring in China, and will in turn mean the loss of Taiwan as a nation.

Pre-emptive would be the only course here. But you would have to hit every single target with stealth fighters you could. Pummeling each military facility and troops barrack until nothing remained militarily.

Try to let the rest of the world, especially South Korea, China, Taiwan, and Japan decide what to do. They are the ones most likely to be affected by North Korea's nuclear weapons program, and China has a good army that could do the job if needed.

How often has the US take a neutral stand in any international issues and conflicts ,its time the self -justifed US administration take a look in th mirror, and assess its value in the eyes of the world especially those it has wishes all the time to impose its value on them, including the approach its has tackled the Middle East conflicts and Iraqi war .

Having said that ,I observe that the US'stand has somewhat "soften" recently ,reflective in its immediate and "very restrained reaction "to North Korea firing of missiles ,and the latest development in Iraqi war by where the Bush admin has somewhat adopting "to find a way to out get" of the seemingly prolong entanglement of a looming civil war and the sandwiched of a uninvited stranger troops stuck in the middle of a yet to be identified swampy trap .

Continue to wake up US ! the world have changed ,but not you, so far ,in dealing with international and foreign affairs ,and instead play a defined role of a facilitator of peace (not war )by asisting to create a positive enviorment and atmosphere for peace and stability to prevail in that part of the world .

I'm sure US can do it if it enhances its courage to change from its unipolarity stand to multi-polarity reality.

The world is waiting to witness how the superpower is changing to a benign force to be reckoned begin with the way it deals with the Korea and beyond ,and how a new global order based on mulitlateralism take shape ! of course ,with the pivitol integration of US into the new reality .

Make SOUTH Korea a state, blow up North Korea. Unfortunately, no one (including China) wants North Korea. In fact, China has their military control the border with an iron fist to prevent illegals from North Korea from entering. Ge, shucks, maybe the USA should do the same thing ? Ya think?

Why do you think the USA has the right to do anything, if the USA shuts up and does nothing the perceived threat will eventually dissipate.. the leadership of NK is very unstable and if the USA does something stupid look out,, stay away and things will settle down,, haven't the USA done enough damage in Iraq already.. stay at home and look after your own.

We can't sit back and let Kim Jung Il posture and prance about forever. Unfortunately, North Korea is a puppet state supported by China. Just like back in the 50s, we can't start a fight without getting them involved.

At this point, we just have to wait him out. If we have to talk, let's all hope it's from a position of strength, and not to give in to his mania. Remember that he is keeping his population like virtual slaves, without enough food or shelter, and zero hope.

we should influence other countries that have a vested interest to take care of business and wear down N.Korea until they are weak and then step in at the last minute and get all the credit like we did in WWII
