I once read somewhere that submarine launched ballistic missiles must have a range greater then 4000miles in order to target any point on the earth - as no point is further then this. This seems like a generalisation rather then a fact and i was wondering what the absolute minimum would be - excluding inland seas not accessable to submarines.

Copied from Wikipedia:

"The Eurasian pole of inaccessibility, the point on land farthest from any ocean, is located approximately 320 km (200 mi) from the city of Urumqi, in the Xinjiang Autonomous Region of China, at 46°16.8′N 86°40.2′E (in the Dzoosotoyn Elisen Desert). This position is at a distance of approximately 2648 km (1645 mi) from the nearest coastline."

Since Eurasia is the largest land mass, it's got to the extreme point for the whole world. Probably the reason for the 4000 mile range is due to accessibility of submarines to coastlines, but that's just a guess.
