Summary - during partition, India consisted of many princely states. They were given the option to join India, or not. The king of Kashmir decided to join India, and not Pakistan, and be accorded special status (article 380 etc).

Pakistan did not like it, obviously, as they thought that Kashmir was mostly muslim (Jammu was mostly Hindu/ Budhdist then). So, Kashmir should belong to them. So, they fought two wars and pakistan lost both times, but did manage to hold on to a large part of Kashmir (Pak occupied Kashmir).

The UN under US influence wanted a plebiscite, but that was never agreed to by India.
