There's loads to do in Seattle, and August is a perfect time to visit weather-wise. Here are a few:

Visit Pike Place Market (free unless you buy something)
Visit the Chittenden Locks in Ballard (also free and the most-visited spot in Seattle according to my mom)
Check out Seattle Center (where the Space Needle is... I think it costs about $15 to go up to the observation deck)
Take the Underground Tour that begins at Doc Maynards in Pioneer Square (I don't know the cost)
Hit the beach at Alki or Golden Gardens (free)
Take a ferry ride to Bainbridge Island (I don't know the cost)
Tour the UW campus (April is the best time because the cherries are in bloom, but it's a beautiful campus any time of year... you might have to pay a couple bucks to park and to get into the Burke Museum if you choose, but wandering is free)
Take in a baseball game at Safeco Field... the food is great even if the Mariners aren't (tickets range from $7 for bleachers to like $55)
Check out some of the shops and restaurants on the waterfront (there's an actual mummy at Ye Olde Curiosity Shoppe on Pier 54)
Check out Argosy Cruises... they have a bunch of lunch, dinner and themed cruises with varying price tags (if you're here during Seafair, they have a couple of Blue Angels cruises where you can watch the performance from the lake)
Take the Ride the Ducks amphibious tour... it starts at Seattle Center, I think (and is probably overpriced!)

Pike Place Market (Free), Space Needle (14), China Town (Free), Experience Music Project (locally called EMP) (20), Waterfront (Free), also check searches on the internet. One place that a lot of Seattle residents dont know or think about is the Seattle Underground Tour in Pioneer Square (11). It gives a tour of Seattles Underground City before they raised the street levels also short history clips while touring. Its fun to do but get there kinda early and dress properly cause remember that some of the places you'll be going to have not been used in some 90 years.

I've lived here all my life, and I recommend:

Pike Place Market (this is a must do)
Ride the monorail to seattle center and do the Space Needle
Skip the EMP (too expensive and kind of lame)
Pioneer Square shopping
Argosy Cruises Harbor Cruise
The Underground Tour
Chinatown Shopping go to Uwajimaya! (daylight hours only)
Woodland Park Zoo
Gasworks Park is nice on a sunny day
Capitol Hill Broadway Ave has all the interesting shops
The U district has all the counterculture and cool stuff
Fremont is the center of all the artsy fartsy stuff

NIGHTLIFE!
Belltown is the place to go
Take a quick taxi to any of these spots

Dress to kill if you go to Amber, Twist Restaurant & Lounge, or Q. These are the A list clubs right now.

Can Can is relaxed and mellow. Very popular.

Last Supper Club is big, boomin, and the full package club.

Just go to Belltown LOL.

It completely depends on what you're into. Downtown Seattle is great for shopping and has a wide diversity of experiences to enjoy. Pikes Place market is a must, I think. If you're into outdoorsy stuff, get out of the city and check out some hiking areas/fishing or lake areas...or go to ocean shores.

Check out the website below. It might help.

check out seattle.citysearch.com

Lots of stuff to do. Pike's place market downtown is fun, the downtown Pike/Pine shopping area, Lake Union, etc. Staying downtown will be expensive, if you have a car you could consider staying in Renton for example.
