Wireless hotspots or Wi-Fi hotspots are terms used to describe an area or location where you can connect to the internet wirelessly. It is indeed legal and most are free, but s few do require authorisation.

To connect to a wireless hotspot, you'll need an 802.11 or Wi-Fi enabled device such as a laptop, PDA or smart phone. 802.11 is just an IEEE standard for wireless networking. Most laptops, PDAs and smart phones sold today already have wireless capability. Older laptops may require the purchase of a wireless card.

Once you have your wireless device, you'll need to find out where these hotspots are. Luckily, there are many websites which enable you to find hotspot locations around the world. Here are some examples:

1. http://www.jiwire.com/
2. http://www.hotspot-locations.com/
3. http://wi-fi.jiwire.com/

No matter where you are, the internet is never far away thanks to wireless hotspots.

Wireless Hotspot is a place where you can access the internet. When you are in place, say Robinson Galleria (Ortigas, Philippines), you just plug your WLAN USB. Something will pop-up on your system tray. Double-click then press the connect button. You don't have to sign anything or get consent to 'MOST' hotspots, just plug your WLAN USB and in a couple of minutes you are connected. It is legal and more airports now are becoming 'wireless hotspots', so are McDonalds around the world. You may search on the internet if there are hotspots near you as there's no signage in cafes, restaurants that they are 'Hotspots'.

All you need is WLAN USB (802.11b/g), which costs about US$20 (NT$650 here in Taiwan), which included CD to install on your notebook computer the first time.

Good luck!

You need a wireless networking interface card. It should pick up the signal of a wireless hotspot as long as the hotspot isn't password protected or encrypted in some sort of way.

most are legal. usually wifi in nature. basically it's put out there by whichever store or company for their patrons to use. some instances you need sign up with the carrier in order to use the spot but places like starbucks i know you ave to sign up with someone usually. smaller local individual owned business will generally put it out there for free.
